More of my life’s minutia

I went to a football meeting last night. The two coaches and I – I'm the commissioner – met to discuss next Tuesday's draft and where the returning players might play. From last year, we lost our left tackle, our wing back, and out quarterback. As we're discussing positions, the head coach says, “Dee… JD's pretty smart isn't he? He could learn all the plays… Can he throw?” He is considering JD for the quarterback. Hmmm. Never thought that would happen. When I got home last night I talked to JD. I told him it's not guaranteed but if he works hard he might get the job. I asked him to set up an old tire in the backyard and throw fifty passes a day at it until practice starts. He said he would. I think JD would make a good quarterback, but I'm not sure he'll put in the hard work he needed to earn the job.

The kids are both enrolled. JD in 6th, Kay in 3rd. They are both excited for school. I hope that continues for at least another 10 years. I enjoyed school, but got burned out in college – almost dropped out after 3 semesters. I am certainly glad I didn't! I think that the value of a good education is under appreciated. Enjoying school and being excited every fall for it to start again is critical to a successful educational experience.

Yesterday, my travels took me to Goodland – don't laugh, I've been further. My meeting was at 11:00, I left Salina at 7:00 and arrived at the Northwestern Kansas Technical College at 10:55. “Good Morning! I'm Dee Warren, I have an eleven o'clock meeting with Gary and his staff.” The secretary looked at me with an odd expression… “Good morning, Mr. Warren. Did you know it's only 10:00? We're on Mountain time.” ARRRRRGGGHHHHH! I never thought of that! Fortunately, the secretary was able to round everyone up and we started the meeting at 10:20. That was a first! I've had people forget that I was coming, I've showed up late, but never, NEVER, have I been an hour early for a meeting.

My mom and dad just bought a schnauzer. They named him Dieter. I've mentioned that. But how ‘bout this? I have wanted a schnauzer for years. They are wonderful companions, fun, loving, and they think they are guard dogs. Besides that, they are just down-right adorable. Kim has never been for it. “We're gone too much.” Which we are. “I'm allergic to dogs.” Which she may be. Those are the two main objections. But Monday she says: “Where did they get Dieter?” “Anthony.” “Do they have any more?” “Yes, two males.” “How much are they?” “$125.” Then she says… “You can get one if you want…” I haven't figured out what she's up to yet, but I know there's something big coming! Even though I've wanted one for a while, I declined. If we got one now it would be hard to train him with school starting again. Plus, I'm not sure Jane would want to watch three kids while we go to K-State games!

This morning would have normally been a morning that I stopped and got a hot cup of coffee on a crisp morning – savoring the flavor that I have missed these hot months of summer. While I did stop for a cup of coffee this morning, there was nothing unusual about that. I have not stopped getting coffee, even on the hottest days. I guess that means I have finally turned into my papa…

Time Flies...

Have I really not written a blog since June 30? Where does time go?

Since my last post I have gone on a cruise, survived two (or four if you count each leg) flights, been to state baseball, finished the softball and baseball seasons, driven over 2000 miles for work including trips to Omaha, Lawrence, Girard, and Goodland (tomorrow), helped Mike and Sonya move, and evaluated kids for the Salvation Army football draft.

I think I have spoken to most of you about the cruise. You can see my photos on Facebook and I am getting ready to order a photobook from Photoworks.

Work is picking up... seems like companies might be ready to spend money again!

My mom and dad bought a new dog this weekend. A black schnauzer. They named him Dieter -- that pronounced Dee-ter, not Die-et-er. I can see now that they are going to shorten his name to Dee. Here Dee, come 'er boy! Nice.

My new dog has been put on hold -- seems the female has an unusual cycle so the artificial insemination did not take. Probably better. I would rather get a hunting dog in the spring rather than late fall -- more time to train him (or her).

Besides football, I will again be coaching soccer this fall for Kay. She is also playing volleyball, which I will NOT be coaching.

I hope to get a camping trip in soon. We have not been at all this year. Seems pointless to own a camper if you're not going to camp!

More later... I promise not to wait 30 days before my next post...
