Christmas Miracle

Kim and I got most of our Christmas cards out in the mail this morning. If you get one, we had your address, if not, we didn't!

Merry Christmas to all. I hope you get everything you asked Santa for!

How 'bout them Cowboys?

Kimmie and I trekked to Dallas this past weekend for the final game in Texas Stadium. The atmoshpere was festive, the game sucked! The Cowboys played bad and lost. The entertainment for the evening was provided by two drunks in our section. I was sure one of them was going to fall over the railing, bust somehow he managed not to...

I saw a lot of the Cowboy greats, the Cheerleaders, and the hole in the roof. I think I like the atmosphere at college games better, but I'm glad I was there.

On the trip home I visited my grandparents' graves. I left silk poinsettas to brighten their holidays. Then I drove by my grandma's house. I sat in the parking lot across the street and the house looked different. Much smaller than I remember it. I found myself wondering how eighteen of us fit in their to celebrate Christmas. There was a lot of love in that house and I think that's why it looked different -- the love is gone. The new owner took down the basketball goal that JD played on. They took down the swings in the carport that were too close together for the girls to swing on. I hope they have a much fun and memories in that house as I did.

If I don't blog tomorrow... Merry Christmas.

My little cub scout...

Since JD is playing basketball and being a Music Man, I took Kay to the cub scout Christmas party last night. She had fun, decorated a cookie, played some games, drank home-made root beer, and sat on Santa's lap. JD showed up after Santa left, after the cookies were gone, but he did collect his pinewood derby car kit.

I had the privilege of shoveling snow this morning. Salina got about 4", even though the radio said it was too cold for much snow and we would get less than an inch. As late as 10:00 last night that was still the forecast. I was surprised this morning. But it was light and fluffy so it was easy to shovel.

JD and BB

Basketball season kicked off on Saturday. JD's team went 0-4 at the MAYB Winter Kick-off in Canton and Galva. They played well, except for the first game on Saturday. I think that was the only game they got beat by double digits -- 34-8. JD had half the points in that game. He scored 4, 10 in the second game, and 4 in the third game. He also grabbed several rebounds and had a few assists. Then he got a big head and had a goose egg for scoring on Sunday. But I was proud of him because I know he didn't get his mad basketball skills from his mother or me!

Over, but not done.

Pound Plunge Salina ended tonight. but I'm not stopping now. Primarily because I won a free month at the Salina YMCA with a personal trainer. I finished down over 34 pounds over the 12 week program. I am still aiming to get skinnier for my own health and for the cruise. I would like to get to 190 and hold, that will stave off diabetes for the near future and hopefully for years to come. Diabetes runs in my family -- my doctor has said it's not a matter of "if", but "when" -- and I would like to delay the inevitable inevitably. Kimmie did well, too.

Here's my final weigh-in chart.

Meaningless Trivia

The '62 Mets featured catcher Harry Chiti, who was acquired in a trade for a player to be named later. After Chiti posted a .195 average in 15 games, the Mets sent him back to the Indians, making him the first player traded for himself.

I've added a feature to the right that gives you meaningless facts. I found this one on SI this morning and thought it was entertaining. Usually you never hear about "The Player to Be Named Later" even though he is the most frequently traded athlete.

Dogs and Cats

What is a Cat?
1. Cats do what they want.
2. They rarely listen to you.
3. They’re totally unpredictable.
4. When you want to play, they want to be alone.
5. When you want to be alone, they want to play.
6. They expect you to cater to their every whim.
7. They’re moody.
8. They leave hair everywhere.

CONCLUSION: They’re tiny women in fur coats.

What is a Dog?
1. Dogs spend all day sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house.
2. They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but don’t hear you when you’re in the same room.
3. They can look dumb and lovable all at the same time.
4. They growl when they are not happy.
5. When you want to play, they want to play.
6. When you want to be alone, they want to play.
7. They leave their toys everywhere.
8. They do disgusting things with their mouths and then try to give you a kiss.
9. They go right for your crotch as soon as they meet you.

CONCLUSION: They’re tiny men in fur coats.

Almost done... Squared.

My Christmas shopping is almost done. I have my dad's gifts purchased, my mom's purchased (all on-line). I have Kim mostly done, all on-line. The kids will be finished this weekend. So far we have bought them a ______ and a _____. We also got them both a _____. JD got a really cool ______. And we bought K a _____.

Sorry kids... you didn't really think I would put what we got you did you?

I'm feeling better so I'm back on my bike. I went 15 miles in 50 minutes last night and 8.5 miles this morning in 30 minutes. Final weigh-in is Sunday. I hope to be down more than 30 pounds since the beginning. I think I will be. Kimmie is doing GREAT. She has lost almost as much as me. We're just wasting away at our house!

My weekend in pictures (explanation below).

Friday night, we put up the Christmas tree. I changed from chasing white lights to red LEDs this year. We found room on the tree for all of our Hallmark ornaments. We need a bigger house so we can have two trees...

At 10:00 Friday night, I started working on a clog in the line from our kitchen. About half way through the run, it picks up the ejection pump and right before it goes into the 4" main, the sump pump empties into it. At the point that those three join the 4" main, it was clogged. Which caused EVERYTHING to back up into the sump basin. I worked on it until midnight, but could not reach the clog so I let it drain into the sump and left it overnight -- it smelled really nice. At 7:30 the next morning, I was at Lowes to purchase a 2" PVC Wye and Cleanout. By 8:30, I had cut the pipe so I could get to the clog and installed the new cleanout and then let the sump pump go to work.

At 9:00 I took the kids to church to practice for the Christmas program. I headed to Lowes and bought a new storm door. Earlier in the week Kim said "It probably wouldn't be as cold in our house if we had a new storm door". My husband instincts quickly interpreted that to mean "It would be nice if you would put a new door on the house". So, I did. It's a full view glass door with a hide-a-way screen at the top. The nice thing is it has two closers on it so the kids can't leave it open!

After the door installation, I fixed JDs backboard. He broke the plexi on it a couple of weeks ago when it was cold. I bought a new piece of plexiglass and epoxied it over the old one. Not perfect, but he's not Micheal Jordon.

I then finished decorating in the living room... hanging ornaments over the doorways, covered the mantle with Christmas stuff and filled the picture window with more Christmas stuff.

When Kim got home we shopped for our angle tree purchases and delivered them to the mall. The kids were wired.

Sunday I watched Andrew sing. It was nice, but they sang some songs in Spanish and Latin (I think) -- I though Christmas hymns could only be sung in English or German... Hope I don't get a bad mark in the "Big Book" for that...

Last night I finally got all the boxes taken back down to the basement and set up Kim's Nana's nativity.

I had to come back to work to get some rest...

Your Loss is My Pain.

Tuesday, I was treated to a delightful concert by the combined 5th grade bands of Heusner, Stewart, Schilling, and Coronado grade schools. Kim, conveniently, could not attend due to previously scheduled class.

I, on the other hand, heard unique renditions of Mary Had a Little Lamb, Hot Cross Buns, Jingle Bells, Up on the Rooftop, and oh so many other wonderful tunes. JD played the trumpet in this pint size band. You could barely see him over his music stand. The entire ordeal lasted 20 minutes but we had to be there an hour before so I also got to hear them warm up! That was worth the price of admission right there! I have tried to download the digital video of the concert so you could share in my joy... but to no avail. My really cool, compact digital video camera doesn't seem to want to let go of this memory!

On the bright side, I did get JD to wear a tie.

Two fer

Merry early Christmas. You get two posts today for the price of one.

I put up my star and extra lights on my Nativity. Enjoy!

D

Wow, do I have some catching up...

Ah, Thanksgiving... at time for family and friends. Food and fun. Hunting and drinking -- but not at the same time! And more food.

I only gained a pound over the extended 4-day foodfest that we celebrate every year in November. Back to work last night trying to lose those extra pounds!

We had an enjoyable Holiday at Jane and Delmar's. My parents made the trip up for the day. I was glad, as they were planning to stay home... Grandma stole my Dallas Cowboys hat (see picture). She was proud of herself. Late in the afternoon JD and I slipped away to go hunting. He "helped" shoot a pheasant with his Red Rider BB gun.

The snow made it nice on Friday, except that I got soaked from the waist down. Friday night we trekked down to Paden's and hung out with the family and Jody. Wow -- is she a trip. I bet I felt better Saturday than she did and I didn't feel all that great! Saturday I witnessed history as Smith Center won their 5th straight state title and 67th game in a row. That is impressive.

More hunting on Sunday. I shot two total for the weekend, but I saw quite a few birds. It was just Harley and I, except for JD on Thursday.

I also spent a lot of time on my genealogy project over the long weekend. I traced another branch of my tree back to the 1600s. I am now officially of Scotish, Irish, English, French, and Native American Ancestory. Sorry Kohlses -- No German yet.

Now the pictures -- Harley enjoyed the snow... It's amazing how many kids fit around Nana's table... Grandma in my hat... And finally Paden's. The blurry group shots at Paden's are courtesy of Jody. I have no idea why she could not hold the camera still...

Crafty

For years, I have been looking for a Nativity display to replace the painted scene that deteriorated to the point that we don't put it out anymore. I remember a display that a friend in Coffeyville had that was cut from 8' pieces of 1 x 12. The figures were very tall and skinny, making them abstract. I loved the display. I have tried to find patterns for something like it but with no luck. I could probably create my own pattern, but I never remember in July when I should be working on it, I always wait until Thanksgiving and suddenly remember that I need a Nativity for my yard.

This year I searched again, like I always do. But this year was different. I found a picture of a little Nativity online and decided that I could quickly put it together. SO... last night the kimmie, the kids, and I went to Lowes and Hobby Lobby then went home with high hopes of spending the evening with my wife and kids building the figures. Kaylee played with Play-Doh, JD played a video game, and Kim played on the computer. Oh well, at least we were all in the same room!

The supplies are simple: Three clay pots (we used clay-looking plastic pots), burlap, three foam balls, grass for the manger, wood for a star (which I will find at Delmar's this weekend), three strings of lights (one for the manger, one for the star, and one to circle the display), and a hot glue gun.

The results are this:

Once I get the star complete, I will post a picture of the Nativity lit. I'm sure you can't wait...

Monday Musings

Back to the future: K-State looks to bring back 1998 by hiring Bill Snyder as it's next football coach. I am not particularly thrilled about this -- as a university they can't look to him to save the football program everytime they see it in decline, afterall he is 69 years old. I also don't think this is a long term relationship so I hope they have a plan. Bill is going to need good young coaches to help recruit and a mature coach that can take over in two years.

I got my Christmas lights up yesterday. I broke down and started switching over to LEDs. The box says that I can plug 47 strands end to end safely. Good. Now I can turn my home into a beacon for lost UFOs!

I lost a little over a pound last week.

Kim ran 7 miles yesterday. More power to her!

We finished off the K-State tailgaiting season in style. Wow there was a lot of food there. I would have lost three pounds if it weren't for all the food.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. I am thankful for my family, my co-workers, and the time I spend with my wife and children -- even if I don't always show it. Also that I scored tickets to the last reugular season Cowboys game in Texas Stadium.

I've been Tagged.

My skinny wife kimmie tagged me...

Here are the rules:

* Link to the person who tagged you. (check)
* Post the rules on your blog. (check)
* Write 6 random things about yourself. (check)
* Tag 6-ish people at the end of your post. (not so much)
* Let each person know he/she has been tagged. (not so much)
* Let the tagger know when your entry is up. (Hey kimmie, my post is up!)

Here's six random things about me.

1. When kimmie posted a comment that said "Tag, you're it", I thought she was flirting with me. Then I found out it was this...

2. I have had three pets named Sammie. A parakeet, a fish, and a dog.

3. I broke all of the storm windows from my neighbor's house that were stored in their carport when I was about 8. Their grandson helped...

4. I rode a three wheeler with no brakes through an electric fence. My cousin and I had disconnected the brake to use the hand control as a throttle because the throttle lever was broke. Who needs brakes anyway.

5. I have played "War" with roman candles, with BB guns, and with paintballs. When I was 12, 17, and 21 -- in that order.

6. Me too! I saw Sam Kinison just weeks before he was killed in a wreck. He has trying out new material at Snookies when I saw him too. I too saw George Carlin while I was at K-State... had to share my seat with Jon Wefald.

Kimmie tagged everyone that I would have tagged... I don't have any friends that blog.

Two-fer...

I posted twice today with pictures... Yesterday's bike ride and JD's birthday below that so don't miss any of the great photos and commentary.

D

Nice Ride!

Kay, Kimmie, and I went on a bike ride yesterday. I'm thinking that days like yesterday are going to be few and far between in the next few months. I never really get much exercise on those rides but atleast I'm moving. I took advantage of the pace to take pictures. Kay took JDs camelback water pack and spent most of the time drinking water instead of riding!

After the bike ride, Kay and I took Harley for a walk, Kay picked berries off a tree at the school while I walked... Then I did my Wii Fit, and then rode 13 miles on my stationary bike. That all added up to a 3.2 lb wight loss last week. For the eight week period ending yesterday, I am down 26.2 lbs, or 10.84%. I can still hit 40 lbs by the end if I lose 3.5 per week. Kimmie has lost a larger percentage than me and she looks great!

D

0-3

JD Celebrated birthday number 11 by watching three football teams post double-digit losses. Friday we went to Hutch and watched the Cougars fall to Hutch 28-0. Saturday he was fortunate enough to witness a truely dismal effort by the Wildcats against the Huskers. Then we hauled him to Lawrence so he could go watch the Chiefs lose number 18 in 19 tries. Poor guy. Maybe birthday number 12 will be better!

I have pictures from our tailgate party in Manhattan. We got JD a giant cookie and celebrated his 83rd birthday. We didn't have two "1"s but we did have an "8" and a "3". And as everyone knows, 8+3=11... Our set up was great. Three tents with the sides installed to block the wind and a propane heater for warmth! Enjoy the pics!

On her game...

Here I sit, typing on my blog, and Kim just stopped by to say, "I just ran (huff, puff) five miles, (huff, puff) I feel great, I'm (huff, puff) going another mile". SHOW OFF!

Tomorrow I will post super exciting pictures from the weekend!

Maybe I'll win Sportsman of the Year from Sports Illustrated, too!

Last night Kaylee and I attended the Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Innitiative Fall Awards Ceremony. My team and I were awarded the team sportsmanship award for the 2nd-3rd grade girls soccer division. This is our second award for sportsmanship in her four years of playing soccer. I guess when you finish 1-5, scoring only 4 goals in those six games, and give up over 25 goals they call it "sportsmanship" and give you an award! There were only two from my team there, but Kaylee and Rebecca were proud of their patches. I on the other hand recieved a very cool bobble head trophey.

Sign of the times...

I have a co-worker that went to the New Kids of the Block concert in Kansas City last night. Apparently, a lot of the women in the crowd were pregnant, although I don't think the New Kids had anything to with that (most of them were not attracted to women anyway, were they?). Anyway... the concert t-shirt vending booth was selling onesies. How funny is that, but a stroke of marketing genius to sell onesies to hormonally-imbalanced mothers-to-be. But I bet they were kind enough not to gouge women who didn't know better than to put their babies in a New Kids onesie... I'm sure they were selling them at cost...

Just a sign of the times...

D

Star Power

I was watching a special "Outside the Lines" on ESPN Sportscenter this morning. It was a feature on the children of famous parents that attend Oaks Christian High School in North L.A. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Football teams play a double header on Friday nights. The JV tee it up first and start with a kid named Gretsky at quarterback and a reciever named Smith. The Varsity start a quarterback named Montana. These kids are the sons of Wayne Gretsky, Will Smith, and Joe Montana. The Varsity is 8-0 and the JV is 7-1.

The coach said that the first game he thought the paparazzi were there to see him, but was mistaken. He also said they have a rule on the team that dads can't coach their sons during the game. But Joe Montana frequently wanders down from the stands and ends up on the sideline. So the coach changed the rule: Dads can't coach their sons during the game unless they have three Super Bowl MVPs to their name.

Gretsky said this is really his first exposure to American High School Football and that his son really has no desire to skate. Will Smith's son is, according to the coach, a D-1 Prospect as a Sophomore and could be starting at wide reciever on Varsity, but said "Coach, I'm not thinking about D-1 right now I just want to play with my friends..."

These three are classy. Then you see dads at South games screaming at the kids, screaming at the coaches because they know everything. And I would wager that the three kids featured on ESPN are 10 times the athletes as the ones South has. Gretsky, Montana, and Smith could probably cause a world of problems for the coach, yet they let them do their job -- with the exception of Joe Montana teaching footwork to his son. But I didn't see any of them screaming at the coaches from the stands...

Forty never looked so good

Sorry this post wasn't up yesterday but I was recoperating from the weekend... oh wait. That was Kevin, not me. I felt great. No headache, no unexlpained bruises and I even had the stomach to eat yesterday. I think Kevin had a good time, though and that's all that matters.

As you all know the evening started at Bambino's with a lovely dinner and drinks. As I was reviewing the photos I was startled by the size of the margarita glasses at Bambino's. As you can see from the photo below, the glasses were BIGGER than Darin's head. And all for $4.

I had a Purple Haze Martini. It was made with Vodka, Blue Curacao, and Cranberry Juice. The first one was excellent and purple -- a purple drink in Lawrence is the only way to go. The second one was blue and not so good. I think it was Vodka, Blue Curacao, and Vodka!

I know everyone really like my camera phone. The flash was a big hit. A lot of the pictures turned out blurry because no one would hold still. This photo of Andrew turned out, but he has his eyes closed and turned his head. Thanks, Andrew.

I had a good time at Johnnie's. I especially like that Lawrence doesn't allow smoking in the bars. That was GREAT! No smokey haze, no stinky clothes, and no burning eyes. I love Lawrence! Wait, I think I got carried away there. I love Lawrence's smoking ban! Here are more photos some photos from Johnnie's -- I hope Kevin liked his shirt!

From Johnnie's we bounced from bar to bar, only actually getting in to The Ranch. I am much too old for bars like that. The music was too loud, the crowd was too big, and the people too young! We were packed into a corner of the bar, yelling to communicate, hanging out with a bear. Kimmie, my hot wife, did get asked to dance though. It must be the Pound Plunge -- as of last night Kimmie has lost 16.3 lbs (over 7 weeks). She officially passed me in percentage of weight lost... not for long though, I'm motivated now. Anyway... back to the photos... here is The Ranch.

This is Mark and Sarah with an "H". I think we took it easy on her. I would hate for any of us to scare her off...

In the end, it was a good evening. Kim and I missed breakfast, but so did the brithday boy.

D
